Free League Opens Five RPG Systems to Third-Party Creators

Free League Publishing now lets third-party creators publish supplements for five of its RPG systems in up to 13 languages, making this one of the most internationally accessible open licence programmes in tabletop gaming. The newly opened systems are Dragonbane, Forbidden Lands, Symbaroum, Coriolis: The Third Horizon, and the 2025 sequel Coriolis: The Great Dark. All licences are royalty-free, irrevocable, and fit onto just two pages of plain language.

If those names are new to you, here is the short version. Dragonbane is a streamlined fantasy RPG that plays fast and has a retro Scandinavian art style. Forbidden Lands is a hex-crawl survival game with a darker edge. Symbaroum drops players into a vast, corruption-filled forest using its own d20-based system. The two Coriolis games mix space opera with Arabian Nights mythology. Four of the five run on Free League's Year Zero Engine (the same system behind Alien and Vaesen), while Symbaroum uses its own distinct ruleset.

When Free League first opened Dragonbane to third-party creators in 2023, the community responded fast. Dozens of modules appeared within months, from homebrew dungeons to full campaign settings built by fans across Europe and beyond. That flood of content is what convinced the publisher to extend the same terms to four more systems. Creators can now publish in English, Swedish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, and several more languages.

For game night organisers curious about tabletop RPGs, these systems are a good starting point. Each offers a distinct flavour, and the growing library of community content means you are not limited to what Free League publishes. All five licence documents are available on Free League's website.
