If your group has worn out the standard deck of cards, Ted Alspach has a pitch: take Spades, add princesses with special powers, then unleash a zombie outbreak on the lot. Zombie Princess, from Bezier Games, turned up at Origins Game Fair this week, and it is the kind of light card game that slots neatly into a games night.

Find events near youIt is the sequel to Rebel Princess, which gave the classic card game Hearts a modern spin. Zombie Princess does the same for Spades, the team-based trick-taking staple. The story picks up after the princesses fought off a wave of unwanted marriage proposals, only for the rejected princes to shamble back as the undead. Charming.
Each player takes a princess with her own ability, and you pair up to win tricks while bidding on how many zombie hordes you will clear. The twist is that every one of the four rounds adds a new rule, so the game keeps shifting under you rather than settling into a single rhythm. It plays 3 to 6 and lands around the $35 mark.
