War of the Dragon Is the First Wheel of Time Board Game

Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time has spawned a TV series and shifted millions of books, but it has never had a proper board game. That changes now. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is live on Kickstarter until 23 June 2026, and it is the first licensed board game set in Jordan's world, from Dire Wolf, the studio behind the much-loved Dune: Imperium.

It pits the Light against the Shadow across a map of the Westlands, spanning the sweep of the saga up to its climactic Last Battle. Dire Wolf blends tableau building, set collection and area control, so you are recruiting allies, levelling characters and pushing forces across the map while managing your own progression. More than 100 characters feature, from the core five (Rand, Egwene, Mat, Perrin and Nynaeve) to Moiraine, Lan and all thirteen of the Forsaken.

There are two ways to play. Hero Mode is the gentler entry point and scales from two players up to four in teams of two, while Epic Mode is a heavier two-player face-off for people who want the full war. The campaign has comfortably funded, with more than $700,000 pledged so far. Pledges run from the standee-based Dragon Reborn edition, which is also getting a retail release in 2027, up to the crowdfunding-exclusive The One Power edition and its 40 sculpted miniatures.

For a series this big to wait this long for a tabletop outing is a little surprising, and Dire Wolf's track record with Dune: Imperium suggests the asymmetry and tension should land. The campaign closes on 23 June, so rally your reading group if you fancy splitting a pledge.
