One Piece: Escape From Egghead Races to Tables in July

One Piece fans, there is a new board game racing to shelves in July, and this one is built for a quick, scrappy game night rather than an all-day campaign. One Piece: Escape From Egghead, an officially licensed game from KessCo and Toei Animation, drops 1 to 4 players into the manga's Egghead arc as they scramble to flee the island before the Marines lay it to waste.

It is fully competitive: everyone is racing to be the first to help Luffy and Bonney escape, using press-your-luck dice rolls and each character's special abilities to push through three boss encounters. A game wraps up in 30 to 60 minutes, which makes it an easy weeknight pick. The premise leans on one of the most dramatic stretches of the story, with Jewelry Bonney targeting Dr Vegapunk while a Marine siege closes in.

This is KessCo's third One Piece game, and it is deliberately positioned in the middle of their range. It sits between the lighter party energy of One Piece: Luffy's Bento Panic and the heavier strategy of the big-box One Piece: Dawn of Liberation. As KessCo's Alex Kessler put it, it is "ideal for solo gamers or small groups who want to have a competitive game night."

The catch for UK readers: the launch is pegged to Target and online retailers in the US, priced at $30, so keep an eye on import shops if you want a copy here. Either way, it is a reminder that the One Piece tabletop line keeps expanding for one of the best-selling manga of all time. Rally your crew and find a game night.
