Modiphius and Firaxis Reveal XCOM Tabletop Miniatures Game

London-based Modiphius Entertainment has signed up Firaxis to bring XCOM to the tabletop, with the announcement landing on 29 April as part of Firaxis Games' 30th anniversary celebrations. The new miniatures game draws from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 reboot that revived the strategy series, and focuses on the squad-based tactical layer rather than the global research and base management.

Modiphius is a known quantity for licensed tabletop work. The Fulham-based publisher, founded by Chris and Rita Birch in 2012, already runs Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, Star Trek Adventures, Mass Effect: The Board Game, and Dune: Adventures in the Imperium. The XCOM project will sit in Modiphius's Five X line, which is built around solo and co-op campaign play. An early write-up from Tabletop Sentinel says it will lean wargame rather than board game, with a strategic layer campaign system, no cards, and limited tokens.

This is the second tabletop XCOM after Eric Lang's well-regarded 2015 Fantasy Flight design, which used a smartphone app to drive AI alien attacks. The Modiphius take looks set to do the opposite, with fewer cards, more miniatures, and more painting time. No release date or price has been announced yet, but the company is taking email signups for updates.
