King of Tokyo has always been Godzilla with the serial numbers filed off. After several editions of dancing around it, Iello has licensed Toho's monsters properly, and King of Tokyo Godzilla puts the real cast in the box: Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Hedorah, Rodan, Mothra and Mechagodzilla.

See how it worksIf you have somehow never played it, King of Tokyo is Richard Garfield's dice game of giant monsters kicking each other around a city, for 2 to 6 players, ages 8 and up, in about half an hour. You roll six dice over three throws and keep what you want: victory points, energy, healing or claws. The fiercest player occupies Tokyo and earns extra points, but cannot heal and has to face every other monster alone, so the whole thing turns into a game of chicken about when to jump out. First to 20 points wins, or you can simply be the last monster upright.
The Godzilla edition keeps that engine and adds two card types. Thirteen Event cards sit inside the 50-card energy deck, and there are 48 Evolution cards on top. Contents run to eight wooden dice, six monster boards and six standees.

Start organising for freeIello has not said publicly what those cards actually do, and its own Godzilla page still reads "more information coming soon". If Evolutions give each kaiju its own upgrade path, that answers the oldest complaint about King of Tokyo, which is that it is all dice and no decisions, and gives Mothra a reason to play differently from Mechagodzilla rather than just looking different. Worth knowing before you commit: at $59.99 this is roughly double what a base King of Tokyo costs, and those monsters are standees rather than miniatures.
It reaches retail in August 2026. King of Tokyo has always been the game you hand to people who claim they do not like board games, so if you know a few lapsed kaiju fans, round them up.
