Horrified: D&D Sends You to Ravenloft to Hunt Strahd

Curse of Strahd is one of the most beloved Dungeons & Dragons adventures ever written, and this July it becomes a co-operative board game monster hunt. Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons - Ravenloft drops 1 to 5 players into the mist-shrouded land of Barovia to bring down the vampire Strahd von Zarovich and a rogues' gallery of Ravenloft horrors. It arrives on 19 July.

Horrified, if you have not met it, is one of the most approachable co-operative games going. Designed by Prospero Hall for Ravensburger, the 2019 original had players banding together to defeat Universal's classic monsters, Dracula, the Wolf Man and the rest, using a simple pick-up-and-deliver system that newcomers grasp in minutes. The series has since visited American cryptids, Greek myth and, more recently, the world of Dungeons & Dragons itself.

Ravenloft is the spookiest turn yet. Alongside Strahd you will face a Carrionette, a murderous living doll, the witch Baba Lysaga stomping about in her walking hut, and the blood-fed, sentient Gulthias Tree. Each of the four monsters has its own way of ending your run. To fight back, players pick from five D&D classes new to the series, the Ranger, Druid, Sorcerer, Paladin and Warlock, each with unique powers, and roll a custom d20 to resolve the action.

There is one catch worth budgeting for. This is an expansion rather than a standalone, so you will need the Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons core box to play, on top of Ravenloft's $34.99 MSRP (pre-orders run a little cheaper). A co-op that wraps up in about an hour and looks this good is a treat for game night, especially a spooky-season one. Putting a group together? See who is up for a session near you.
