Horrified: D&D Ravenloft Pits Heroes Against Strahd

If your co-op group likes a monster to hunt, Ravensburger has sent the Horrified series somewhere suitably grim. Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons - Ravenloft drops one to five players into Barovia, the gothic-horror realm ruled by the vampire Strahd von Zarovich, and it is out now.

This is a standalone follow-up to last year's first Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons game, and it keeps the same hook: everyone plays together against the board, racing to see off a set of monsters before the town is overrun. You pick one of five new heroes drawn from the Ravenloft setting, then work as a team to defeat four foes: Strahd himself, the murderous living doll Carrionette, the witch Baba Lysaga and the sentient Gulthias Tree. As in the previous D&D outing, a custom d20 drives the dice-rolling, giving fights a roleplay flavour without dragging a full RPG to the table.

Ravensburger picked Ravenloft, the gothic-horror corner of Dungeons & Dragons, precisely for the scares, having seen the first Horrified: D&D game go down well last year. If you have played any of the Horrified line, you know the appeal: it is one of the friendlier co-ops going, fast to teach, tense to play and forgiving enough for a family table, which makes it an easy pick for a spooky game night.

It plays one to five, ages 10 and up, and retails for $34.99 from Target and Ravensburger. If you fancy running a co-op horror evening for your group, round up some players and let Barovia do the rest.
