Legend of the Five Rings is heading back to the tabletop with a proper area control game, and early reports from GAMA Expo 2026 suggest it might be one of this year's standout big-box releases.
Gunsen: The Battle for Toshi Ranbo comes from Office Dog Games, the same publisher behind the recently announced Lord of the Rings: Circle of Conflict. Designed by Ben Rosset and Matthew O'Malley, the duo behind Between Two Cities (Stonemaier Games) and The Search for Planet X, Gunsen drops two to six players into the Emerald Empire as rival clan commanders fighting for control of the legendary fortress of Toshi Ranbo.
The game blends area control with tableau building. Players recruit samurai, draft orders, and build military engines to complete victory objectives. The first player to reveal seven gunsen (the folding war fans used by samurai commanders to signal troops) wins instantly. That timing pressure, combined with the asymmetric clan abilities of the Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion, and Unicorn, should give the game real replay value across its 45-minute play time.
Sharp-eyed fans may recall this game was originally announced as Tessen. Office Dog renamed it after discovering another published game with a similar title. The switch to "gunsen" actually fits better: while a tessen is a heavy iron fan used for combat, a gunsen is a lighter commander's fan used for signalling and strategy, which is closer to what players actually do in the game.
Gunsen releases on 28 August 2026 at $59.99. If you have been waiting for L5R to get a proper board game since the CCG era, this one looks like the real thing. Find your local game night to rally a warband.
