One of board gaming's best-loved Viking brawls is coming back. Blood Rage: Valhalla, a standalone sequel to Eric Lang's 2015 hit Blood Rage, has left the factory and is shipping to crowdfunding backers now, with a wider retail release expected later this year. Because it is standalone, you do not need the original to dive in, which makes this the easiest on-ramp yet to one of the genre's great area-control games.

Set up your group for freeThe original Blood Rage earned its reputation with a smart mix of card drafting, area control and glorious plastic miniatures, all wrapped in a diceless combat system where dying gloriously in battle can score you as many points as winning it. It landed on the recommendation list for the 2015 Kennerspiel des Jahres, Germany's expert game of the year, and picked up a clutch of Golden Geek nominations. Valhalla carries the story past Ragnarök into the afterlife, sending three to five players to war for the favour of the gods across roughly 60 to 90 minutes. The miniatures come from Studio McVey, and the game is now published by Tycoon Games, formerly Tabletop Tycoon, which picked up the Blood Rage rights from CMON.
Backer copies are on their way now, so retail should follow before long. UK players can expect a recommended price around £125, with shops such as Zatu already listing pre-orders below that. If Norse clans smashing each other for divine glory sounds like your kind of evening, round up your raiding party and clear the table.
