Wingspan Pocket Shrinks the Bird Hit for Summer 2026

Wingspan, the bird-collecting game that pulled a wave of new players into the hobby, is getting a pocket-sized cousin. Stonemaier Games has confirmed Wingspan Pocket, a smaller, faster take on the modern classic, and it is due this summer. If you have ever wanted an easier way to get friends or family to the table, this could be the one.

The original Wingspan is an engine-builder where you attract birds to your wildlife reserve, each one unlocking a chain of useful abilities. It plays beautifully but can take a while to teach. Wingspan Pocket trims it down to a small box and around 30 minutes. According to Board Game Wire, the game is card-based with double-sided cards and a distilled version of Wingspan's row-activation system, plus a brand-new mechanic. The art and icons do most of the explaining, so there is barely any text to read. It plays 1 to 5 and keeps original designer Elizabeth Hargrave at the helm.

Stonemaier has kept the rest under wraps. Co-founder Jamey Stegmaier has said the full reveal will come closer to launch, which is pencilled in for the third quarter of 2026.

See how it works

A short, icon-driven Wingspan is easy to teach, quick to finish and small enough to throw in a bag. That makes it a tidy pick for lunch breaks and holidays, a faster fix for people who already love the full game, and an easy sell to anyone who still thinks board games means Monopoly. When it lands, it is a fine excuse to round up some new players and run a learn-to-play.
