SPIEL Essen 2026 Sells Out and Opens an Eighth Hall

If you have ever dreamed of walking the floor at the world's biggest board game fair, 2026 might be the year to finally do it. SPIEL Essen has sold out every last scrap of exhibitor space for its 2026 show, and for the first time in its history the fair is throwing open Hall 8, putting all eight halls of the Messe Essen to use at once.

That expansion adds roughly 3,700 square metres of floor, bringing the total to 81,200 square metres. The organisers are calling it the fourth area record in a row, and demand was so high that booths were fully booked before the registration deadline even passed, with a waiting list now in place. For a hobby some keep insisting has peaked, a sold-out hall the size of a small town is a fairly emphatic rebuttal.

SPIEL is where hundreds of publishers debut their autumn releases, so it doubles as the unofficial launch pad for the games you will be hearing about all winter. This year's fair runs from 22 to 25 October, with artist Peter Mohrbacher signed on as the 2026 ambassador. Plenty of UK gamers already make the pilgrimage across to Germany, and with the trade hall bigger than ever, there has rarely been more to see.

If you are tempted, the trick is to not go it alone. Essen is far more fun with a crew to split demos, swap recommendations and carry the inevitable haul of new boxes back to the hotel. Round up your group, or find people heading the same way, and you can organise a meetup at the show in a few minutes. Sort your tickets early, though, because if the exhibitors sold out this fast, the hotels near the Messe will not be far behind.
