Toy Battle, the As d'Or 2026 Winner, Hits the Riviera

Toy Battle, the quick two-player skirmish that stunned Cannes by winning the As d'Or 2026, is getting fresh terrain to fight over. La Croisette, a new board expansion, sends your clashing toy armies to the sun-soaked French Riviera, and it is due in August 2026. If you have been after a snappy two-player game for your next game night, this is a good moment to pay attention.

For the uninitiated, Toy Battle is a 15-minute duel from Italian designer Paolo Mori (known for Libertalia and Ethnos) and Alessandro Zucchini, published by Repos Production and distributed in the UK by Asmodee. You deploy toy troops across a whimsical battleboard, either drafting reinforcements or advancing a soldier one territory at a time. Each unit has its own trick: soldiers recruit more soldiers, robots strike from range, and a lone duck beats every other troop yet loses to every other troop. You win by storming your opponent's headquarters or holding the most medal-yielding regions. Back in February the game beat Flip 7 and Rebirth to take the As d'Or, France's most prestigious board game prize and one of the strongest signals a gateway game can earn.

La Croisette adds a ninth battleboard to the eight already in the box, and the sea changes everything. The two headquarters sit at opposite ends of the promenade, the red base parked in a sleek yacht and the blue base holding the Palais des Festivals. Because both sit on the water, new Water tiles bring movement restrictions and positioning bonuses you have not had to plan around before, so familiar tactics need a rethink.

At around a couple of pounds for a single double-sided board, it is an easy add-on for anyone who already keeps the base game in rotation. Toy Battle is exactly the sort of fast, always-different duel that fills the gap between heavier games, so if you fancy running a two-player night at your club, find a game night near you.
