Fighting Fantasy collectors, clear some shelf space. Sir Ian Livingstone's new gamebook Tomb of the Golden Skull arrives in paperback on 27 August, and nine days later it gets a hardback collector's edition limited to 400 signed and numbered copies, going on sale at Fighting Fantasy Fest 6 on 5 September.

Find events near youThe hook for collectors is on the dust jacket. The official Fighting Fantasy blog confirms the hardback carries a brand new map of Allansia by Leo Hartas printed on the reverse, which is the sort of detail that makes people who own three copies of Deathtrap Dungeon start clearing their diary. The Fest runs at the University of West London in Ealing, and that is where the hardback goes on sale.
The book itself sends you across Arantis. Allansia is under threat from Valmorka the Spider Demon and her army of Plague Spiders, and you are racing to find the legendary Dragonblade and a lost artefact before she finishes the job. Standard Fighting Fantasy fare in the best sense: one reader, some dice, a pencil, and a great many ways to die badly.

See how it worksThere is a second hardback coming too. City of Thieves, one of the classics of the line, gets a hardback edition on 10 September, with signed unnumbered copies up for pre-order at Blackwell's and a handful of advance copies at the Fest. As the official Fighting Fantasy blog put it, new Fighting Fantasy hardbacks are like London buses.
Four hundred numbered copies is not a lot spread across a fanbase this size, so if the hardback is the reason you are going, plan accordingly. Gamebooks are solo by nature, but the Fest is where the hobby gets to be a room full of people again.
