What if you could play a roleplaying game without ever cracking open a rulebook? That is the pitch behind Whisperstone, the next project from Flatout Games, the studio behind the 2022 Spiel des Jahres winner Cascadia. It swaps character sheets and stat blocks for a system of interlocking puzzle pieces, and Gen Con 2026 is the first place anyone outside the studio can try it.

Start organising for freeWhisperstone runs on a system Flatout calls HEIRLOOM, where the rules are baked into the physical components. Each piece carries colours and shapes that tell you what it does, so stats, gear and tactics slot together on the table rather than living in a book. Flatout reckons a group can set up an adventure in under 30 minutes and learn to play in a few, which is a big deal for a genre that often asks newcomers to digest a hundred pages first.
The game itself is a cooperative adventure. You explore landscapes and cities, meet characters, crack riddles, build relationships and hunt down the lost Whisperstones to restore harmony to the realm. Flatout's Molly Johnson describes it as a puzzly experience pitched at families and people new to RPGs, which fits the studio's knack for approachable, good-looking games like Calico and Verdant.

Find events near youThere is a catch for the impatient: Whisperstone is still in development, and the Kickstarter is not expected until roughly a year after the show, so Gen Con is very much an early taste. If you are heading to Indianapolis from 30 July, it is worth seeking out. If not, line up your next game night while you wait.
