Tomb of Horrors Reborn as a Free RPG Maker JRPG on itch.io

If you have ever wanted to throw your party into Acererak's death funhouse without having to find four other people willing to die in a sphere of annihilation on a Tuesday night, MrAlcoro and friends have made your day. Their fan-made JRPG adaptation of the classic D&D module Tomb of Horrors is now free on itch.io, built in RPG Maker and faithful to the brutal, trap-stuffed crypt that Gary Gygax first ran at the 1975 Origins convention before publishing it as module S1 in 1978.

Tomb of Horrors is the dungeon that taught a generation of D&D players to read every door description twice. Gygax originally designed it to humble high-level characters from over-confident groups, and it has been reprinted and updated more or less constantly ever since, including a slot in 2017's Tales from the Yawning Portal. The traps are infamous for being lethal regardless of saving throw. The demilich at the bottom is the kind of thing that makes parties write retirement letters.

The team built the adaptation back in 2019 as a college Level Design class assignment and have only now released it to the public. The result is, by Wargamer's own admission, a bit rough around the edges. Typos, bugs and the odd unbalanced fight pop up early. But the dungeon's bones are intact, the flavour text on every interactive object captures that "you have ten seconds to make the right call" feel of the original, and the difficulty has been pulled directly from the rulebook rather than softened for a casual audience. Wargamer notes that "amid the jank, there's a charming sincerity and dedication to this adaptation."

Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.

See how it works

It is the kind of weekend curio tabletop nerds love to share around: free, lovingly stitched together, and just legally distinct enough from a Hasbro property to exist on itch.io. If your D&D group has been threatening to run Tomb of Horrors for years and never quite committed, grab it from MrAlcoro's itch.io page and find out exactly how it would have gone for them in an evening or two.
