Thunder Road: Ignition Brings Car Combat in a Smaller Box

If you have ever eyed up Restoration Games' demolition-derby dice game but balked at the size of the box, Thunder Road: Ignition is your way in. It is a standalone, streamlined version of the acclaimed Thunder Road: Vendetta, built for quicker games in a smaller, cheaper package, and it premieres at Gen Con 2026 (30 July to 2 August) for $35.

Thunder Road is high-octane vehicular mayhem for two to four players. You roll a fistful of movement dice to hurl your cars down the highway, ram rivals off the road and survive a gauntlet of hazards, with the last crew driving taking the win. Ignition keeps the core system from Vendetta but trims and tweaks it: half-sized road boards including new curved sections, four new car crews, new commands, and new terrain and damage types. Missile-loaded cars now take the place of the old helicopter, and pit stops give wrecked vehicles a route back into the race. The result is fewer rules, a faster teach and races that wrap up in 25 to 45 minutes.

Restoration Games has built its name reviving old favourites, and it struck gold with Thunder Road: Vendetta in 2023, a chrome-plated reboot of an 80s car-combat classic that reviewers took to quickly for its table presence and easy-to-teach chaos. The knock against it was length and heft. Ignition is the answer: the same reckless fun in a box you can bring to any table for less money.

Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.

That makes it a cracking pick-up-and-play choice for a group night, the sort of game you can teach in minutes and run again and again. If you fancy hosting one, you can list a game night near you for free. Ignition debuts at Gen Con before a wider retail release, and buying it at the show nabs you an exclusive Sinkhole Swerve promo road board while stocks last.
