Tales of the Old West Rides Into the Gold Rush

Tales of the Old West walked away from UK Games Expo 2026 with the Judges' Choice award for Best Roleplaying Game, and publisher Effekt is wasting no time. It has unveiled Gold Country, a major supplement that drags the gritty Western RPG back to the boom-and-bust madness of the gold rush.

The core game runs on a heavily modified version of Free League's open-licence Year Zero Engine, the same family of rules behind hits like Alien and Blade Runner, and it drops players into the unforgiving 1870s New Mexico frontier. According to Geek Native, Gold Country turns the clock back roughly twenty years to the 1850s, swapping dusty cattle country for the silver and gold rushes that reshaped California and Nevada. Expect fresh regional material for both states plus a campaign framework built to steer game masters through the era's particular pressures: overnight boom towns, claim-jumping, vigilante justice and the social powder keg of everyone chasing the same seam of ore.

The supplement also adds a new resource called Faith, which represents a character's core conviction and belief in their own survival, a fitting addition for a setting where desperation and hope sit uncomfortably close together. As a supplement it will need the core rulebook to play, so this is one for groups already saddled up rather than total newcomers.

Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.

Want to try the system first? Effekt offers a free starter kit called QuickDraw on DriveThruRPG, with simplified rules, ready-made characters and an intro scenario, so you can run a one-shot this weekend.

There is no firm release date for Gold Country yet, but with the Best RPG trophy still warm on the shelf, expect Effekt to push it hard. Western RPGs are having a real moment, and this is shaping up to be one of the genre's standouts.
