The biggest board game show on the planet has run out of room. For the first time in its 40-plus-year history, SPIEL Essen will fill all eight halls of Messe Essen when it returns from 22 to 25 October 2026, and every square metre of stand space sold out before the registration deadline even closed.

Start organising for freeIf you have ever wanted to see the widest possible spread of new games in one place, this is the year. The fair now spans 81,200 square metres, up roughly 3,700 on last year, marking a fourth straight exhibition-space record. To put that growth in perspective, the show occupied six halls and 68,528 square metres as recently as 2024. Organisers have opened a waiting list for exhibitors who missed out, which tells you how hot demand has become. Last year's edition set a visitor record too, and 2026 looks set to be busier still.
SPIEL has also named a new face for the show. American artist Peter Mohrbacher is the official ambassador for 2026, giving the fair its visual identity through his surreal, faintly unsettling angel illustrations. Mohrbacher worked on Magic: The Gathering between 2011 and 2014, illustrating dozens of cards, before pouring his energy into Angelarium, his own catalogue of mythological beings. The Golden Demon miniature-painting competition also returns, cementing Essen as a gathering point for the world's best painters.
Got a regular group? Create a private community, poll for the best date, vote on games, and let your friends RSVP in one place.
Set up your group for freeFor anyone travelling, October will come round fast. Hotels near Essen fill early, and the four days reward a plan. Heading over yourself? See who else is going and organise a meetup so you are not navigating eight halls alone.
