Pokemon Center Launches Early Access to Fight Scalpers

The Pokemon Company is finally fighting back against scalpers. A new Early Access programme on the Pokemon Center website will give selected fans first dibs on high-demand cards and merchandise before general release, with multiple anti-reseller safeguards built in.

Anyone who has tried to buy Pokemon TCG products in the last year knows the problem. Sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Destined Rivals have been nearly impossible to find at retail, wiped out within minutes by resellers who flip them at inflated prices. The situation has pushed genuine collectors and players out of the hobby entirely.

The new system works through invitation links sent to Pokemon Center newsletter subscribers. Each link is unique, single-use, and tied to one account. Using multiple browsers or devices can void your access, and creating duplicate accounts will get your invitation pulled. It is not foolproof, but it puts meaningful friction between scalpers and product.

The programme currently covers customers in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Exact eligibility criteria have not been made public, though signing up for the Pokemon Center newsletter is the entry point.

This will not solve the scalping problem overnight. Early Access does not guarantee stock, and demand for Pokemon products continues to outstrip supply by a wide margin. But it is a concrete step in the right direction, and the kind of structural change that collectors have been asking for. If it works, expect other publishers and retailers to take notice.
