Paizo has finally rolled the new Pathfinder Beginner Box: Secrets of the Unlit Star into shops, and it's the first thing this hobby has handed new Pathfinder 2E players in years that doesn't require a maths degree and a willing GM friend. The £40-ish starter, out as of 6 May 2026, packs in a 72-page Hero's Handbook, an 88-page Game Master's Guide, a full set of polyhedral dice, 100-plus paperboard pawns, and a brand new solo adventure that means you don't even need a group to get started.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksThat solo mode is the headline change. Paizo has been quietly losing the on-ramp battle with Dungeons & Dragons for years, and a beginner kit that lets a complete newcomer roll a barbarian, monk, bard or sorcerer and play through a guided adventure on their own is a clever fix. The Temple of the Unlit Star adventure is also sanctioned for Pathfinder Society organised play, so anything your character does carries over into the global PFS campaign. Handy if you fall in love with your monk and want to take them to your local society game.
This is the first proper update to the Beginner Box since Paizo's 2024 Pathfinder Remaster, and the timing is sharp. With Daggerheart still riding its first-anniversary high and D&D leaning into a live-service subscription model, having a single box that fits everything a new table needs into one purchase is exactly the sort of thing UK shops can pitch to curious lapsed roleplayers.

The new solo mode also means you can lend players a copy to try at home between sessions.
