If you have a soft spot for short, snappy strategy games where you can see the whole table while you play, Mythologies is one to bookmark. Super Meeple's drafting and tableau-builder lands in UK shops on 22 July via Hachette Boardgames UK, who confirmed the game on their UK Games Expo line-up earlier this month. It supports 2 to 4 players, runs around 30 minutes, and is pitched at age 10 and up.

Start organising for freeThe clever bit is the variable setup. Designers Maxime Babad and Mickaël Garcin have built a game with eight different mythology decks (Greek, Egyptian, Norse and beyond), and only four are used in any given game. The combinations work out to 70 different starting configurations, each pulling in a different mix of gods and creatures, with 22 cards per mythology and a roster of around ten unique deities and monsters in each. That is the kind of replayability claim publishers love to print on the back of the box, but with this much modular content it stands a fair chance of holding up beyond the first half-dozen plays.
Each turn, you draft cards from a shared pool, slot deities and creatures into your pantheon, and chase divine favours over four short rounds. The constant pressure to commit to a mythology early should keep things ticking, and the table presence of building up a personal Olympus or Asgard tends to be a nicer hook for newcomers than yet another resource track on a graph-paper score pad. Reviews from French sites that got early copies flag tactical depth alongside the quick play, which is the rare combination that survives the school run and the post-pub late session.

If you fancy putting Mythologies on your group's calendar when it lands, create an event and lock in a release-week game night.
