Mars Attacks Returns to the Tabletop via Kickstarter

The Martians are invading again. Atomic Toybox has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Mars Attacks! Twisted Tabletop Game, a new board game based on the classic Topps trading card series that had parents panicking back in 1962.

For those unfamiliar, Mars Attacks started as a set of 55 trading cards depicting a gleefully violent alien invasion of Earth. The artwork by Wally Wood and Norman Saunders was so graphic that inquiries from a Connecticut district attorney caused Topps to halt production entirely. The IP later inspired Tim Burton's 1996 cult film and a Mantic Games miniatures skirmish game in 2014, but it has been largely absent from the tabletop scene since.

Twisted Tabletop puts players on opposing sides of the invasion. You can either defend humanity or play as the Martian attackers, battling for control of Earth in a competitive game for two or more players. Details on the exact mechanisms are still emerging from the campaign page, and this appears to be Atomic Toybox's first published tabletop game. The Los Angeles-based studio launched the campaign on 7 April with a $30,000 goal, and after two days it sits at around $18,700 with 116 backers. The average pledge of $161 suggests the game comes with some hefty components in the box.

The campaign runs until 7 May, giving it plenty of runway to fund. If Mars Attacks is your kind of B-movie fun, the Kickstarter page has the full details.
