If your Prerelease routine involves buying a pack and cracking it at your own kitchen table, that option is going away. Wizards has confirmed that At-Home Prerelease is being retired in all regions from the Reality Fracture Prerelease onwards, and Two-Headed Giant is getting reconfigured at the same time.

Find events near youAt-Home Prerelease arrived during COVID restrictions to keep players connected when in-store play was not always possible. Wizards says in-store play is available and growing globally, so the scheduling template is disappearing from Wizards EventLink. Shops can still sell you a Prerelease Pack during the early sales window, but those sales no longer count as event participation, and they no longer feed into a store's ticket metrics or its future Prerelease allocations. In practice, your local shop now has a real incentive to get you through the door.
The Two-Headed Giant change is the one that will actually alter how a game feels. Currently each two-player team gets two Prerelease Packs and builds two decks from the pooled cards. From Reality Fracture, each team gets one Prerelease Pack plus two Play Boosters, still building two 40-card decks from the combined pool. Wizards gives three reasons: a card pool closer to the 1v1 experience, a lower cost per team so it is easier to drag a friend to their first Prerelease, and alignment with what the Magic Tournament Rules recommend. Prize support does not change, a 2HG pair still counts as two tickets, and shops may keep offering two packs per team if their players prefer it.

See how it worksReality Fracture itself lands on 2 October 2026, with Prerelease running 25 September to 1 October. It is the set where Jace's plan finally reshapes the Multiverse into a mirrored reality called the Echoverse. The season after it is stacked. October brings Commander Party windows on the 9th to 15th and 23rd to 29th with a Crystal Ball promo, plus a Store Championship, then Magic Presents: All Leylines' Eve runs 30 October to 5 November, handing a Leyline of Anticipation to everyone who turns up.
Running one of these at your shop or club? List it on Backseat Gamer so players can find you.
