Lorcana's Dogs Deck Dominated Ghent, and Regionals Are Next

Disney Lorcana, the trading card game that's become one of the hobby's biggest launches since it arrived in 2023, might have a balance problem heading into its championship season.

At the Lorcana Challenge in Ghent, Belgium, over 4,000 players battled across a weekend for invitations to the World Championships. One deck archetype won every single bracket.

The Amber/Emerald "Dogs" deck, built around Lady and Tramp variants from the Disney classic, won on Friday, won on Saturday and won the Grand Final. Five of the top eight players were on Dogs. Despite being only the third most popular deck entering the tournament (14.5% of the field, behind Amethyst/Steel and Amethyst/Sapphire), Dogs outperformed every other archetype across the weekend. American player Zan Syed took the trophy 3–2 over Italy's Davide Restivo in a mirror match final.

The deck's strength is consistency: it finds its key pieces faster than anything else in the format. In mirror matches, the game often came down to whoever resolved a single card, Under the Sea, first. The Grand Final played out cautiously as a result, with spectators calling it a "snooze fest."

The Lorcana community is split on what comes next. Some want a ban. Most expect the upcoming Wilds Unknown set (prerelease 8 May, full release 15 May) to introduce answers. The stakes keep rising: Regional Championships feed into the European Championship at Disneyland Paris (11–13 September) and the North American Championship at Disneyland Anaheim (28–30 August). Whether Dogs will still be top of the pack by then depends on how the new cards reshape the format.
