Mantic Games has made the core rules for Kings of War: Champions free on its Companion app, giving players a zero-cost way into the Nottingham publisher's fast-play fantasy battle game. The rules went live on 10 April, alongside a wave of new releases.

Set up your group for freeChampions is Mantic's compact take on rank-and-flank miniatures battles. Each player picks a named hero and a company of troops, then fights over scenario objectives in tactical skirmishes that wrap up in about an hour. The two-player Faith and Fury starter box (£42.50) packs 41 miniatures, a gaming mat, tokens, terrain, and the full rules.
The big addition is the Xirkaali, Kings of War's newest faction. They arrive through the Xorxoi Prowlmaster Company Box (£42.50), led by a bear-like cavalry beast and its bonded hunting companion. Two more Company Boxes have also hit shelves: Alanis Sullustis for the Basileans and The Bloody Cardinal for the Abyssal Dwarfs, both at £42.50. Every Champions miniature is now sold individually too, starting at £15.
Run game nights? Backseat Gamer handles RSVPs, waitlists, date polling, and game voting so you can focus on playing.
Start organising for freeIf you run a gaming group, the free rules make Champions a natural pick for a demo night. One starter box and the free app is all you need to get two players battling. The Companion app's membership pricing changes on 1 May, so if you want unit stats beyond the core rules, locking in a subscription before then saves a bit of cash. Find a game night near you or set one up yourself.
