Horrified: D&D Goes to Ravenloft with Strahd and d20 Combat

Ravensburger has revealed Horrified: Dungeons and Dragons - Ravenloft, the second instalment in its D&D-themed cooperative board game line. It releases on 19 July with an MSRP of $34.99, though Target pre-orders are listing it at $29.99 (UK pricing for the base game currently sits around £26 at Zatu). For anyone unfamiliar with the Horrified series, it is a cooperative game for 1 to 5 players where you work together to defeat iconic monsters before they overrun the board. The franchise has sold millions of copies and sits comfortably alongside Pandemic as one of the best gateway co-ops around.

The designer behind it, Peter Lee, knows Ravenloft well. He co-designed the original Castle Ravenloft board game, co-designed Lords of Waterdeep, and led design of the entire Horrified franchise. The game drops players into Barovia, the gothic domain ruled by D&D's most iconic villain: Count Strahd von Zarovich. He is joined by three other threats. The Carrionette is a murderous living doll that dates back to AD&D in the 1990s and was reintroduced to 5th Edition in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Baba Lysaga is a powerful witch who attacks from inside a walking hut. The Gulthias Tree is a sentient supernatural entity that corrupts everything around it.

Five new character classes join the fight: Ranger, Druid, Sorcerer, Paladin, and Warlock. Each has abilities triggered by d20 rolls, a mechanic carried over from the first D&D Horrified game rather than the dice-free original series. That game pitted players against a Beholder, Displacer Beast, Mimic, and Red Dragon. Players can mix and match monsters from both D&D entries for even more variety.
