Haywire: Modern Turns Any Minis Into a Black Ops Skirmish

Got a drawer of miniatures you never use? Haywire: Modern is built to put them to work. The new rulebook from UK publisher Modiphius is a fast, solo and co-operative modern skirmish wargame that runs on whatever figures you already own, no dedicated army required.

Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.

That miniature-agnostic approach is the hook. Haywire: Modern is a class-based tactical skirmish game with 36 classes spread across three tiers, from Tier 1 elite special forces down to Tier 3 militia and rebels. You build operators like breachers, undercover agents and dog handlers, then drop them into quick, lethal firefights. Wargamer called it practically a Call of Duty: Black Ops miniatures game, and the 224-page hardcover backs that up with 40 missions, 19 weapons and 30 support options.

Solo and co-op players are the real target here. The book packs two campaign systems. Tour of Duty is a procedurally generated, base-building campaign about managing resources between missions. Haywire Protocol is a three-chapter narrative that follows Task Force 21 from covert raids in the Middle East to South America and an all-out war in the Caucasus. You can play the whole thing on your own or team up, which makes it an easy fit for a quiet night in or a co-op session with a friend.

Pre-orders are open now at £40, with the hardcover shipping in September 2026. Modiphius is throwing in print-at-home cards and free STL tokens too, so you can get to the table cheaply. It is built for solo play first, but if a regular co-op skirmish night sounds good, round up a crew on Backseat Gamer.
