Finspan, the marine-themed addition to Stonemaier's Wingspan family, is getting its first expansion. Due this spring, the expansion introduces new sea creatures to the roster, with Stonemaier's Jamey Stegmaier previewing cards for the Blue Shark, Hammerhead Shark, and Common Bluestripe Snapper during the publisher's 2026 lineup reveal.

Start organising for freeFinspan is a 1-5 player tableau builder designed by David Gordon and Michael O'Connell, with development from Wingspan creator Elizabeth Hargrave. It takes the Wingspan formula underwater, casting players as marine researchers, but streamlines the experience with a tighter action economy and a snappier 45-to-60-minute play time. Since its 2025 launch it's sitting at 7.8 on BoardGameGeek, slightly below the original Wingspan's 8.1 but a strong start for a game still finding its audience.
Stegmaier has said the expansion will "go deep into several types of aquatic creatures and/or habitats," suggesting a focused approach rather than a broad survey of the ocean. Exactly what the new cards do mechanically is still under wraps, but the presence of shark species hints at predator-prey dynamics or food chain interactions beyond Finspan's current systems. More details should surface as the Q2 release window approaches.
