If you play board games on your own, Final Girl probably needs no introduction, and there is good news for fans heading to Birmingham this month. Van Ryder Games is making its UK Games Expo debut, and it is bringing four new Final Girl feature films to the show, including one you cannot get anywhere else.

Set up your group for freeFor the uninitiated, Final Girl is a solo horror board game built to make you feel like the doomed protagonist of an 80s slasher movie. Designed by Evan Derrick and A.J. Porfirio and first published by Van Ryder in 2021, it puts a lone heroine on the board against a relentless killer. You spend your turns moving between locations, scrabbling for items, rescuing victims and working up the nerve to fight back. The clever part is the modular "feature film" system: each scenario box pairs a unique killer with an iconic location and a couple of playable Final Girls, all dropped onto a shared Core Box ruleset. Mix and match killers and settings and you get your own horror double bill.
The Series 4 films are the freshest additions to that library, and Van Ryder is showing them off at the NEC. Headlining the stand is Shriek, a convention meta special feature starring a villain called Mort the Teenage Dirtbag, plus a separate film, The Green Terror. The rest of Series 4 keeps the horror-movie spirit going with Bad Times at Buddyland, A Rotten Harvest and A Demon in the Shadows, each with its own killer to survive. A Polygon writer picked the Final Girl Starter Set as his favourite game of 2024, so a fresh batch of scenarios is a genuine treat for solo players.
