Hunter: The Reckoning Legacy of Defiance Lands 6 May

Hunter: The Reckoning gets its biggest expansion yet on Wednesday 6 May, when Renegade Game Studios drops the Legacy of Defiance Sourcebook for the World of Darkness horror RPG. If you only know the line by name, Hunter casts you as ordinary humans who've decided to fight back against the supernatural, with sessions built around a "cell" of co-operating hunters chasing vampires, werewolves and worse.

The headline addition is the new lineages mechanic. Lineages are inherited Hunter traditions, so when you build a character you're not starting from scratch but picking up the wisdom and the mistakes of the hunters who came before, baked into your trials, your gear and how you approach the work. Eight lineages ship in the book, each with their own history and grueling initiation.

On the cell side, where players collaborate to build the team they're playing, there are 12 new cell types, 2 new Drives, 10 Perks, 8 Loresheets and 2 Cell Advantages to flesh out who you are and why you're chasing this particular slice of the dark. For Storytellers, the back half of the book offers 6 new Quarries, 7 new Locations and a 4-part Chronicle that Renegade reckons is over 20 hours of play. That's roughly five sessions of pre-built material, which is a lot for a 50 dollar hardcover.

This is the latest in a steady drumbeat of World of Darkness 5e releases, after Werewolf's Wyrmtide last September and ahead of The Coming Destruction in June. Hunter has always been the most accessible entry point for a group that wants horror without committing to the politics of vampires or the spirit-world rules of werewolves.
