Europa Universalis: Defying Destiny Adds 18 Realms to the Table

Boxes are landing on doorsteps. Europa Universalis: Defying Destiny, the first major expansion for Aegir Games' heavyweight grand strategy board game, is in the middle of fulfilment after raising EUR 754,000 during its Gamefound campaign (over EUR 1.25 million including late pledges) from 3,335 backers. The expansion throws 18 new playable realms onto the board, from Scotland and Norway to Persia and the Teutonic Order.

For anyone unfamiliar with the base game, The Price of Power is a heavy grand strategy board game designed by Eivind Vetlesen and published by Aegir Games under an official licence from Paradox Interactive. It carries an 8.77 average rating on BoardGameGeek with a weight of 4.66 out of 5, firmly in "clear your whole afternoon" territory. One to four players (six with the Deluxe Edition) manage economies, wage wars, and navigate diplomacy across three centuries of European history.

The franchise has a wonderful circular history. Philippe Thibaut created the original Europa Universalis as a French board game in 1993. Paradox Interactive adapted it into a PC game in 2000, eventually producing Europa Universalis IV, one of the most popular grand strategy video games ever made. Aegir Games then brought it back to the tabletop in 2023, completing the loop.

Defying Destiny focuses on the underdogs: nations that never quite became great powers, faded from prominence, or peaked outside the base game's starting date. The expansion adds 396 new cards, 10 new scenarios, two new game boards (a Holy Roman Empire map and an Asia Distant Continents map), and a 28-page scenario booklet. The Italian Realms Pack (Milan, Florence, Savoy) and Baltic Realms Pack (Novgorod, Lithuania, Teutonic Order) were both unlocked as stretch goals.

Fulfilment runs through June 2026. If you missed the campaign, the pledge manager closed in March and is no longer accepting orders. Your next chance will be at retail once fulfilment wraps up later this year.
