Coast Watchers Is Volko Ruhnke's Solo WWII Spy Game

You are alone on a jungle island: a radio, a handful of loyal scouts, and an entire Japanese fleet steaming past your hideout. That is the premise of Coast Watchers, the new solo and two-player game from Volko Ruhnke, and it is shipping now from GMT Games.

Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.

See how it works

Ruhnke is one of the most respected names in the hobby, the designer behind GMT's celebrated COIN series of counter-insurgency games including Fire in the Lake, A Distant Plain and Andean Abyss. Coast Watchers, full title Coast Watchers: Allied Field Intelligence in the South Pacific, 1942-1943, trades guerrilla insurgency for the real Allied coastwatchers who hid in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea, radioing warnings of Japanese ships and aircraft while trying not to get caught.

It is built for 1 to 2 players and runs 1 to 4 hours. Wooden standup blocks represent your coastwatching stations, guerrillas, refugees and crew, while facedown counters hide the Japanese build-up, so you never quite know what is coming. There are 15 standalone Situations plus four linked campaigns, and a full solitaire mode that pits you against the game itself.

At an MSRP of $102 (roughly £80) it is a proper big-box affair, with a mounted board, 64 blocks and 90 cards, and it is available now. If you have wanted a way into Ruhnke's designs without wrangling four players around asymmetric factions, a tense solo game about a radio and a lot of nerve might be the easiest door in.
