Captain Flip: Isla Bomba Lands With Submarines and New Maps

Captain Flip: Isla Bomba, the latest expansion to PlayPunk's pirate-themed crew-builder, is now available in UK shops via Hachette, adding new boards, treasure maps and a blank map you can scribble on yourself. If your group already loves the base game, this is the variety pack you've been waiting for.

Captain Flip itself was a 2024 Spiel des Jahres family-game nominee, losing out to Sky Team but landing on plenty of game-night shelves regardless. Designed by Paolo Mori (the Italian behind Ethnos and Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest) and Remo Conzadori, it's a 20-minute tile-flipping puzzle for 2-5 players where you draw pirate tiles, decide whether to keep what you've got or flip for the unknown, then slot them onto your crew board to score.

Isla Bomba doesn't reinvent any of that. Instead it bolts on four new boards and five new treasure maps, the journey now passes through a submarine, a prison and an observatory before arriving at the titular bomb-strewn island, with each board triggering different effects after tile placement. Symbols like bombs and sextants show up more often, leaning harder on existing character abilities. The treasure maps now reward different coin-grabbing strategies, and there's a blank map for groups who want to design their own runs.

UK distribution comes via Hachette Boardgames UK, which took over PlayPunk's titles from Asmodee in January, so you'll find it at Zatu, Magic Madhouse and your local shop now. Family game nights with younger kids should slot it in straight away.
