Mantic's Kings of War: Fracture Heads to Pre-Order Next Week

Kings of War is about to crack open its biggest year since the 4th edition launch. Nottingham-based Mantic Games has confirmed that Wave 1 of the new Fracture campaign hits pre-order next week, with fourth edition boxed sets for the Forces of the Abyss and the Ogres landing in shops at the end of May, each bundled with a brand-new hero miniature.

The whole thing builds toward Fracture itself, the second campaign book of 4th edition, which lands in late June. The book sets up a Pannithor in chaos: the Xirkaali Empire is invading, the Green Lady is making controversial alliances, Basilea's faith is splintering, and the Abyss is stirring up trouble for everyone. Mechanically, the book ships with new army lists for four factions (Forces of Nature, Abyss, Ogres, Basilea), two new scenarios, two universal command orders and revised orders pulled from community feedback.

That community angle is worth a look. Mantic is currently accepting submissions from players for new Command Orders that may end up in the Arrogance book later this year. There's also a tie-in novel, Blades of Samarik by Mark Barber, plus a summer campaign in August where player choices may permanently alter the map of Pannithor.

See how it works

Kings of War has long been the rank-and-flank alternative (think regiments of 20+ minis manoeuvring in formation) for UK gamers tired of Games Workshop's prices, and 4th edition has been steadily picking up steam since its launch. If you've been eyeing a fantasy mass-battle game without remortgaging the house, Wave 1 is a solid on-ramp. Find a wargaming community and start drafting your list.
