Ashes players have a new pair of spellcasters to learn, and the timing is deliberate. Plaid Hat Games has confirmed that Natural Magic, the next expansion for its two-player duelling card game Ashes: Ascendancy, ships to its warehouse and retail partners in mid-July 2026, landing just in time to be legal for the Gen Con 2026 tournament.

Start organising for freeAshes: Ascendancy is the latest incarnation of Plaid Hat's long-running duel game, where two players take on the roles of Phoenixborn, powerful magic-users who summon allies and sling spells across a tense back-and-forth. The draw has always been deckbuilding around a fixed dice-and-cards engine, and each expansion hands you fresh Phoenixborn with their own tricks to build around.
Natural Magic brings two of them. Kanna Galeheart leans on Tailwind strikes, a hit-and-move style that rewards aggressive tempo, while Maeve Luminvale plays a slower, growing game built on garden evolution. Plaid Hat has also teased what comes next, an Illusion Magic expansion featuring Tash Cantasita and Ethias Hollowbrook, so the release cadence is not slowing down.

Getting Natural Magic tournament-legal means the newest cards will be in the mix when the community gathers at Lucas Oil Stadium. For everyone else, it is simply two more ways to play one of the sharpest two-player duels on the table. If you have been meaning to get a rival to the table, now is a good excuse to find people to play with.
