Christmas has come early for solo roleplayers. Black Armada, the UK narrative-games studio behind the GM-less horror storytelling game Lovecraftesque, has launched a Kickstarter for a pair of advent calendars that double as complete solo tabletop RPGs, each designed to be played one door at a time through December.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksThe campaign, Advent of Adventure, offers two very different Decembers. In Advent of Adventure itself you play the one elf who dodged capture after a dragon invades the North Pole and builds its nest on a pile of undelivered presents, leaving you 25 days to save Christmas. For a darker season there is Advent of Abomination, a folk-horror game in which your character spends Christmas alone in a remote forest cabin and slowly realises they are not alone. Both are journaling games: open a door each day, read the prompt behind it, and respond by writing, drawing or recording a voice note, driving your story to its ending by Christmas Day.
It is a neat fit for the format. Rather than a chocolate you forget by lunchtime, each door is a story beat, and the calendar quietly turns "I should play more solo games" into an actual daily habit. Black Armada is run by Becky Annison and Joshua Fox, long-time champions of small, story-first games, and Annison has been vocal about solo journaling as an easy on-ramp into RPG design.
