ZapGM Launches Free Early Access for AI-Powered Virtual Tabletop

A new browser-based virtual tabletop called ZapGM opened for free early access this month, and its standout feature is an AI Co-GM that narrates scenes and voices NPCs during live sessions using text-to-speech.

The AI voicing is the piece that sets ZapGM apart from established platforms like Roll20 and Foundry VTT. Each NPC gets a distinct voice, and the system updates lore in real time as the story progresses. In prep mode, AI tools help game masters build structured campaign content: NPC cards, plot outlines, monster stats, faction notes, and setting descriptions that stay organised and editable throughout a campaign. Content pushes instantly to up to eight connected players.

The virtual tabletop covers the expected feature set: dynamic lighting, fog of war, polygon wall editing, and support for Universal VTT formatted maps. You can import your own images and use built-in vector editing to add walls, doors, and light sources. ZapGM supports D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e with full SRD integration, with templates for other systems.

Registering during early access gets you a free Founders subscription with extra AI credits and battlemap allowances. The eventual pricing model and what happens when early access ends have not been detailed yet, which is worth noting before you invest time building a campaign on the platform. You can try an interactive demo at zapgm.com/demo without creating an account.

For GMs who spend more time prepping than playing, a tool that handles narration and NPC voices on the fly is a compelling pitch. Whether ZapGM delivers on that promise will depend on the quality of its text-to-speech and how well it handles the chaos of a real session.
