XCOM: The Miniatures Game Comes from Modiphius and Firaxis

Commander, you have a new tabletop assignment. Firaxis and Modiphius have just announced XCOM: The Miniatures Game, a Kill Team-scale skirmish wargame set during the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The reveal landed on 29 April as the opening shot in Firaxis's month-long 30th anniversary celebration.

Details are deliberately scarce. The official teaser is little more than the words "Hello, Commander" and a sign-up page, but the pedigree is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here. Modiphius has a strong record adapting big video game properties for the tabletop, with the Mass Effect board game, Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare and DOOM: Arena all under its belt. The most relevant recent comparison is Fallout: Factions, the studio's all-in-one skirmish box that PC Gamer reckoned could be a perfect first step into wargaming, and which the same team is widely tipped to be drawing on for XCOM.

That's a meaningful change of approach from the previous XCOM tabletop, the 2015 board game from Fantasy Flight, which built itself around the strategic meta-layer of base management and tech research. This one is squarely about squads on the table, line of sight and pulling the trigger before something with too many teeth gets in close. The big open question for fans: whether the video game's signature overwatch and percentage-to-hit anxiety survive the translation to dice and miniatures. No price, no release window and no confirmation yet on whether it sticks closer to a board game or leans into full miniatures wargame territory.

Worth a note for British backers: Modiphius is UK-based, headquartered in London, so a chunky Kickstarter or Gamefound campaign would likely roll out with sensible UK shipping rather than the brutal post-tariff transatlantic rates that have hammered other releases this spring.
