Wondrous Creatures, the animal-filled worker-placement game that spent a weekend sitting at number one on BoardGameGeek's Hotness list, has just landed its first major expansion. Winterfall, out now from Bad Comet Games, drops a deep freeze over Starbeak Island.

Start organising for freeSet five years after the base game, Winterfall adds a new mystical species, the Spirits, who play with Snowflakes and Blizzards rather than the usual habitats. Blizzards freeze spaces solid, Snowflakes pile up for end-game points, and shifting Winterfall and Aurora events change what the board offers from one round to the next. Inside the box you get 53 new creature cards, six fresh captains, 11 achievement cards, new Projects that give players more to scrap over at scoring, and an extra solo difficulty. If you have never tried the base game, it is a mid-weight worker placement for one to four players that runs 50 to 90 minutes, designed by Jaewoo Bang, C.W. Yeom and Gunho Kim, and it is free to try on Board Game Arena.
Winterfall is available direct from Bad Comet at $45 (roughly £35), and the studio is running a launch offer through 14 July that knocks $5 off and throws in two packs of card sleeves. If a chilly new layer for a game you already enjoy sounds good, it is on the shelf now.
