Whisperwood Is the Flamecraft Studio's Druidic Bag-Builder

The studio that turned cosy dragons into a 400,000-copy hit is going somewhere darker and a good deal heavier. Cardboard Alchemy, the publisher behind Flamecraft, has revealed Whisperwood, a bag-building strategy game about druids healing a corrupted forest, and it is heading to Kickstarter on 11 August 2026.

Whisperwood is a meaty proposition. It plays 1 to 4 and runs anywhere from two to three hours, a clear step up in weight from the gentle, family-friendly Flamecraft that put the studio on the map. Each round, players simultaneously summon magical energy as tokens drawn from their bag, then plan the incantations they will perform. On your turn you restore air, water and earth, partner with wildlife, inscribe runes and awaken Guardian Golems to carry out tasks.

The catch is the corruption seeping through the land. Druids have to absorb and purify it to heal the forest, but take on too much and your magic starts to falter, which gives the bag-building its push and pull. It is designed by Brad Brooks, Erin McDonald and Christian Strain, with lush art from Sergio Chaves.

See how it works

Flamecraft funded to the tune of around $2 million five years ago and has since become an evergreen seller, so Cardboard Alchemy carries real goodwill into this one. The game showed up at Origins Game Fair this week ahead of the campaign. If you back heavier games as a group, it is worth keeping an eye on the launch, and finding fellow strategy fans to share a play group with.
