Wheel of Time Board Game Smashes Its Kickstarter Goal

Robert Jordan's fans have answered the Horn of Valere. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, the first board game set in Jordan's 14-book fantasy saga, went live on Kickstarter on 27 May and blew past its $50,000 goal within hours. As of writing it has pulled in more than $417,000 from over 2,000 backers, better than eight times what it asked for, with the campaign running to 23 June.

See how it works

It comes from Dire Wolf, the studio behind the hugely popular Dune: Imperium and the Clank! series, so this is no quick licence cash-in. Dire Wolf is billing it as the Wheel of Time in a box, drawing more than 100 characters from across all fourteen novels, from the central heroes to the villainous Forsaken.

There are two ways to play. Hero Mode is the friendlier on-ramp, pitched at players new to the books or to heavier strategy games. Epic Mode is the deep end, where you take command of armies and contend with the Forsaken summoned from a dedicated Dark One's Prison deck. Either way it is a competitive strategy game built to reward knowing your Aes Sedai from your Aiel, while staying playable if you have never turned a page.
