One of the best two-player games of the last decade just got a lot easier to try. Watergate, the card-driven political thriller designed by Matthias Cramer, is now playable for free on Board Game Arena.
Published by Capstone Games in 2019, Watergate pits the Nixon Administration against the editors of The Washington Post in a tug-of-war over evidence and informants. The Nixon player races to accumulate five momentum tokens to survive until the end of the presidential term, while the editor works to connect informants to the President on a pinboard of evidence tokens before time runs out. Games take 30 to 60 minutes, making it perfect for a lunchtime duel or a "just one more" evening session.
Watergate has earned a 7.7 average on BGG from over 13,000 ratings and sits comfortably inside the top 200 games of all time. It won the 2019 Golden Geek Award for Best 2-Player Board Game and picked up an Origins Award nomination for Best Historical Game. Despite the political theme, the game is less about history and more about reading your opponent, managing your hand, and picking the right moment to push.
The BGA adaptation was developed by community developers hersh, Ginso, and TagGerr, and launched on March 18. If you have been curious about Watergate but never wanted to commit to buying a physical copy, this is your chance. And if you already own it, now you can play your mate who lives three time zones away.
If Watergate hooks you on competitive two-player games, find a local game night near you to try it across the table.
