The Old World is getting a fresh coat of paint. Irish publisher Cubicle 7 has confirmed that Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition will land late this year, timed to mark the game's 40th anniversary. WFRP first hit shelves in 1986, and Balbriggan-based Cubicle 7 has stewarded it through 4e since 2018, racking up multiple ENnies and Origins Awards along the way.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksThe headline news for existing groups: 5e is fully backwards compatible with 4e. Old campaigns, classic tomes and your favourite grizzled rat-catcher characters all carry over without conversion. Line developers have leaned into the "evolution, not revolution" framing, with the streamlined ruleset informed by seven years of 4e playtesting. Combat, pursuits and the famously deadly disease rules have all been smoothed out without losing the grimdark teeth.
What's new sits in the structure rather than the maths. Five distinct character types cover Old World Humans, stoic Dwarfs, garrulous Halflings, Wood Elves and High Elves, with 64 distinct careers covering everything from the Coachman to the Witch Hunter. Cubicle 7 has also teased a new "mega campaign" launching alongside the rulebook, plus a fresh range of cards, dice and maps to kit out your group from day one.

Start organising for freeFor Game Masters running other systems who fancy a change, this is one of the cleaner entry points. The d100 system remains the foundation, the Old World setting is one of the richest in fantasy, and the 40-year backlog of adventures means you'll never run out of material. If you're an organiser thinking of starting a new RPG group, find players in your area and pencil in late 2026 for a Reikland campaign. The cover art reveal already has people lining up for the Collector's Edition pre-orders that traditionally sell out fast for Cubicle 7 launches.
