Shut Up & Sit Down closed out its week-long Board Games Direct showcase on Sunday, and among the two dozen games on parade was one you could lose down the side of a sofa. The Brain is a co-operative card game with a single rule that changes everything: nobody is allowed to talk.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksPlay to Z frames it as an abstract heist. There are 36 cards in the box, carrying six different colours, objects and actions between them, and the table shares what the publisher calls "one brain". On your turn you play a card, carry out its action, then draw a replacement. Those actions cover donating a card, playing an extra one, removing objects, removing colours, covering a card, or taking a card (or a whole stack of them) back. The group has to play every card out without leaving too much evidence in the display, which takes logic, deduction, counting and a little luck, none of which you are allowed to discuss.
The clever bit is what happens to the cards you clear. They land face up in front of you, so your accomplices can read something into your choices even though you cannot tell them a thing. It is the sort of restriction that makes a quiet game very loud, in the way Hanabi and The Crew manage.
Got a regular group? Create a private community, poll for the best date, vote on games, and let your friends RSVP in one place.
Set up your group for freeThree difficulty modes are included, each with further ways to make life harder, and Play to Z is selling it for $15. The studio's bigger project is the Arthurian euro Siege Perilous, so this is a deliberate change of scale. Shut Up & Sit Down list it as a game for one to four players.
At that size it is an easy thing to drop in the club night bag for the half hour before everyone arrives. If you need a table to try it on, find a game night near you.
