From tomorrow there is a shortcut: Space Imperia 4X launches on Steam on 28 July, billed on its store page as "a faithful digital adaptation of the acclaimed board game Space Empires 4X by GMT Games, beloved by wargamers for almost two decades."

See how it worksThe board game is a Jim Krohn design for one to four players and has been a steady seller for GMT, with its fifth printing arriving in 2025 after runs in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2020. The appeal is that it delivers proper 4X sprawl, exploring hidden terrain, planting colonies, mining resources and researching technology, without the rules bloat the genre usually demands.
Breich Games have developed the digital version and are publishing it alongside GMT itself, so this is licensed rather than a lookalike. Games are pitched at one to two hours. You build from 17 ship types, research 14 technologies and play across more than 10 scenario setups for two to four players, and every combat ship stays concealed from your opponent until first contact, which keeps scouting and bluffing in the mix rather than reducing everything to fleet arithmetic.
