Sylvaneth 4th Edition Battletome Lands With New Grove Guardian

Age of Sigmar's tree-people have a new playbook. The Sylvaneth 4th Edition Battletome hit shelves on 11 April after a 28 March pre-order, bringing rules for 25 units, a new Grove Guardian model, and a fresh "Creeping Overgrowth" mechanic that takes the faff out of placing terrain. For lapsed players, the Sylvaneth are Age of Sigmar's forest spirit faction, dryads and giant Treelords led by the goddess Alarielle.

See how it works

In previous editions, the Sylvaneth had to maximise Wyldwoods to make their tricks work, which meant a lot of fiddly placement at the start of every game. The new system gives you one Wyldwood at the start, then automatically lets you drop another in your hero phase each turn until three are on the table. It's a small change with a big quality-of-life payoff, and it lets the army's signature movement and ambush plays come online faster.

The new Grove Guardian, a £44.50 plastic priest model, is the kit everyone is talking about. She feeds off the deaths of nearby revenant models, rolling dice equal to their wounds for a 5+ chance of mortal wounds on enemies. She can also cast prayers twice per turn, including one that resurrects fallen infantry units back to half strength. Combined with the army's new pressure on enemy command abilities, the Sylvaneth have shifted from pure mobility into terrain-control and recursion.

Treelords have been retuned too. Vanilla Treelords now trigger special combat effects when they swing, the Treelord Ancient buffs nearby Forest Folk units, and Durthu picked up extra movement and attacks. Goonhammer's review reckons the core of the book is solid and tournament players are already brewing lists. If you've had a half-painted Sylvaneth force gathering dust since the previous edition, this is your nudge to finish them.
