Captain Sonar is the frantic real-time submarine game where two crews shout coordinates across a table and try not to give away their position. It is one of the best party-strategy hybrids of the last decade, and now it is going to warp speed. Matagot has revealed Star Trek: Space Hunt, a reworking of that system set in the Star Trek universe, and it made its playable debut at UK Games Expo in late May.

Start organising for freeThe bones will feel familiar to Captain Sonar fans, and no wonder: Roberto Fraga and Yohan Lemonnier, the duo behind that game, designed this one too, joined by Delphine Lemonnier. Two teams of players face off, each with a Captain steering the ship and firing systems while a Second listens to the enemy's moves and works out where they are hiding. It is a game of bluff, deduction and split-second pressure for two to four players, running about 35 minutes a round.
The Star Trek licence is the hook. According to ComicBook, the box pulls captains from three eras, with Kirk and Spock from the original series, Picard and Data from The Next Generation, and Burnham and Saru from Discovery, while the villain seats include Khan. Each ship handles differently, so your tactics shift depending on who is at the helm.
