Spiel Essen 2026 Picks Angelarium Artist as Its New Face

Spiel Essen has picked its ambassador for October's record-breaking fair, and for once the face of the world's biggest board game show isn't a designer or streamer. It's an artist. Peter Mohrbacher, the Chicago-based illustrator behind the cult Angelarium project, will front the 2026 edition, which takes over all eight halls at Messe Essen from 22 to 25 October 2026.

See how it works

Mohrbacher spent years illustrating cards for Magic: The Gathering before going full-time in 2014 on Angelarium, a surreal encyclopedia of angels rendered as deeply alien constructions. If you've seen an Angelarium oracle deck or spotted his work across album covers, you already know the vibe: bright mandala compositions that feel both holy and slightly dangerous.

Picking an artist for ambassador is a quietly clever move. Board game art has shifted from afterthought to selling point, with publishers building hype around illustrators like Kwanchai Moriya, Ian O'Toole and Vincent Dutrait the same way they used to build it around designers. The organisers called illustration "indispensable for modern board games", which is hard to argue with if you've looked at a Stonemaier or CMON shelf lately.

The 2026 fair is going to be huge. Spiel Essen finally maxed out Messe Essen's footprint by opening Hall 8, adding 3,700 square metres for a total of 81,200, bigger than 15 football pitches. Thursday, Friday and Saturday tickets sold out before the fair even arrived, so Sunday is the last day with availability.

If you're planning a group trip to Essen this October, rally your community on Backseat Gamer and split the travel. Expect Mohrbacher's fair artwork to drop across the summer in the lead-up.
