Four days inside the halls at SPIEL Essen is already plenty of gaming. This year the fair is pushing the games out into the city itself, and a few bits of it are worth planning your trip around.

Start organising for free"Essen spielt!" is a new partner programme running alongside SPIEL Essen, which takes place 22 to 25 October 2026. The centrepiece is three one-off game nights in venues you would never normally get a table in. The 22nd floor of Essen's town hall opens on 21 October from 5pm to 8pm for 135 players. The Red Dot Design Museum hosts 40 people on 22 October from 6pm to 9pm. And on 23 October the Weisse Flotte runs a three-hour gaming cruise on Lake Baldeney with room for 140.
You cannot buy your way in. Places go out through a social media giveaway in September, so it is worth following the fair's channels before then.

The cathedral treasury drops to 4 euros from 5, the GOP variety theatre takes 25% off its shows, Zollverein knocks 10% off its coking plant tour, RuhrEscape gives 15% off escape rooms between 21 and 26 October with the code GEHEIMGANG15, and a pair of VR experiences are half price with the code Spiel2026. Topgolf, Eat the World food tours and guided city walks are in as well. There is even an official fair cocktail, a gin, apple and mint number called Gin & Win, pouring in more than a dozen bars and hotels.
The practical upshot for anyone taking a group: the evenings now have something in them besides a hunt for food. Get the raffle entries in during September, book one non-gaming thing for the Friday afternoon when everyone's brain has quietly melted, and the whole trip goes better. Get the group sorted early.
